So we've been watching Top Design on Bravo religiously...and we can't help wondering, what the hell is Kelly Wearstler wearing? She is quite stunning, but we really don't get the knee socks.
Knee socks and all, Kelly Wearstler is by far our favorite interior designer on earth. She is so incredibly talented and has the best eye for colors.

Modern Table Lamps
We just got back from the Las Vegas Home Furnishing show. There were few notable designs, but we did find a nice lamp line from Shine Everyday that we like. The lamps are colorful, fresh, and very Elle-Decorish.
The first lamp shown here is our favorite. It is a Hollywood Regency styled lamp. It is available in black, white and yellow (shown). We like the yellow the best.

Top Design-Is it A Yawn?
Is Top Design, the new interior design show on Bravo, a yawn? We think it's an absolute yes. Unlike Project Runway, Top Design doesn't have any DRAMA! We want drama, we want talents, we want blood! We want cat fights!
The first episode shows the candidates working in team with a budget of $50,000 to design a room. Now, $50,000 seems like a lot but it is not because it is based on RETAIL prices. Like cars, you should never pay MRSP (manufacturer suggested retail prices for furniture), especially at places like Pacific Design Center. Just so you know, the vendors don't expect to sell them at that prices either. The standard is 30-40% off the retail prices. You usually have to go through a decorator to buy at the design centers, but don't pay a mark up on top of the design fee. That is just plain silly.
Ok, back to Bravo. We don't see any talents on the show yet. The second episode features the candidates doing a kid's room. This time the budget was limited and required more creativity (did you notice the Target logo was not displayed? They must have not paid for product placement). A couple of the rooms were such a joke. We think the right guy got eliminated though.
Hopefully future episodes will hold more exciting designs and better talents.

Home Decorating for Men
Most men are completetely clueless when it comes to home decorating (notice we said most, not all--we've seen some amazing homes decorated by men in our business).
Men tend to like masculine, non-fussy interiors. For this reason, we like Michael Weiss furniture the best. The price range for this line is fair and reasonable, and we particularly like the clean lines.
Here are a few examples of Michael Weiss furniture (made by Vanguard).
We like this modern poster bed for its paneled headboard. It's sleek, modern and warm.
We also like this upholstered leather bed for a more masculine look. The leather/nail heads can be customized. We've done it in black leather with polished nickel nailheads. It looks really slick.

Loft Design-Kelly Hoppen
We love, love modern designs at Inside Avenue. We especially like modern designs that are organic, warm and livable. In our opinion, no one does it better than Kelly Hoppen, an internationally well-known designer from the UK.
Here is a sample of her work from the latest issue of Metropolitan Magazine , using our favorite color scheme, black and white.
A wonderful color combination (note the yellow chair).
How about this for a dining room? Check out the cool chandelier, and again, the use of yellow as an accent color...

The trend toward loft living is increasing. We see more lofts being built than ever. Traditionally, lofts were conversions from old factory and warehouses. Recently, however, more builders are building loft-style developments throughout the country from coast to coast.
Lofts are cool, but they are difficult to decorate. Here is a sample of a great loft design from Metropolitan Home Magazine.
Notice the clever use of all neutral colors....
We love the use of yellow as punctuation. Very clever...
See the use of hallway as a functional space...
The kitchen warms up with accessories...
Here are a few lessons we've learned from looking at these photos:
1)Make use of awkward spaces by using built-in bookcases and desks.
2)Use neutral colors if that is your thing, but pump it up with splashes of colors.
3)Use accessories to warm up the space.
4)Don't stick to one type of furniture. Mix it up.
