Cool Upholstery Fabrics

Isn't it hard to find cool fabrics for upholstering? It's really a huge investment! Most often the cost of upholstering is the same as buying a new piece. This is why you gotta choose it very carefully. The good news is there are SO many choices out there. Hundreds of thousands, literally....

Here are some of our favorite upholstery fabric. All are from Highland Court fabric, a division of Duralee. We like this line because it's very boutique-ish, and the patterns/colors are just sublime.

We are picking bright colors today because we want something cheerful to look at. Times like this, we can all use some pick-me-up, don't you think?

We love this one for either a small chair or a small day bed. This pattern is called Cheaza, the pattern numberis 180512H Color 586.

This pattern is called Heirloom, pattern number 180860H Color Tangerine

This pattern number is 180830H color 707 Tomato. We can just see it on a decorative pillow, or a pair of occasional chair.

We love, love Greek key...it's so modern and clean. This pattern number is 180826H and the color is Tangerine.

All of these fabrics are from the Philip Gorrivan collection (Philip who?) We don't know much about him, to be honest. But judging from the collection, we think it's better than Kelly Wearstler's, truthfully. She's a bit over-extended and over-exposed.

An Architect Rates the Greats

New York architect Peter Marino talks about his 10 favorite buildings of the last 100 years and why he loves them

New York-based architect Peter Marino, the owner and principal of Peter Marino Architect, is known for his ability to design eye-popping retail spaces for the world's top luxury brands, from Armani to Vuitton. Through his inventive use of forward-thinking technologies and fresh ways of manipulating classic building materials such as marble, Marino imaginatively embodies and updates the essence of ultra-fashionable labels.

In one of his highest-profile projects — Chanel's Tokyo boutique, which opened in December, 2004 — Marino turned a 10-story building in the Ginza district into a giant TV screen. The entire façade is covered with 700,000 computer-controlled LEDs (light emitting diodes). At night, the building's exterior displays scenes of models on the catwalk or abstract electronic renditions of classic Chanel suits.

Marino is also known for his residential projects, such as 170 East End Avenue in Manhattan, which is near completion. And his cultural projects, such as the new wing of the Nassau County Museum of Art on Long Island, N.Y., have garnered awards from the American Institute of Architects.

Marino recently sat down with BusinessWeek to discuss his top 10 favorite buildings of the last 100 years. This exclusive list, ranked by the architect, includes stunning works by several winners of the Pritzker Prize, architecture's highest honor (Luis Barragán, Oscar Niemeyer, Renzo Piano, Herzog & de Meuron). Marino also includes examples of adventurous new building shapes - such as Santiago Calatrava's winged Milwaukee Art Museum (seen here) — and successful experiments in façade design. Marino also discusses why and how each has inspired and influenced his own designs for retail, residential, and other projects.

Modern Beach Decor

Summer is here and like the rest of the world, our mind is at the beach. We're so sick of the typical beach decor though. For some reasons it's always the tiresome shabby chic stuff. One of the best beach homes we've seen is in the movie "As Good As It Gets" with Dianne Keaton and Jack Nicholson. Have you seen it? The movie is so so (Dianne Keaton was totally annoying), oh but the decor is wonderful! If you have a chance, rent the video. We guarantee you'll love it (the decor, that is).

Pretty Upholstered Beds

Don't you just love upholstered beds? We do. It's a great way to express your personality and your style. You can make it as luxurious or as simple as you want, just by choosing the right fabric. You can be creative--adding nickel nailheads, tufting, or trims can just change the look completely.

We found a great upholstery company based here in Los Angeles that makes wonderful beds, Nathan Anthony. The beds range from $1800-2500 depending on the fabric. We prefer to do it in our own fabrics (COM-customer own material).

Here are some of our favorites:

Tatum Bed-This bed is pretty. It is similiar to the bed Charlotte has in Sex in the City. You can dress this up considerably with a nice expensive fabric, or keep it simple with a simple cotton stripe or floral fabric.

Elliott Bed-This bed is nice and masculine. We like doing this bed in a simple linen or velvet, preferably solid.

We like this bed for its coziness. This will be wonderful in a velvet or silk fabric.
We like this bed for a tween, or a young girl. It's not too childish yet it looks fresh & young. We love doing this in a pretty floral.
This bed is so pretty for a Hollywood Regency look. A nice faux leather would be fantastic with ith.
We like the simplicity of this bed. We do it often in faux suede.

As simple as this bed is, it's our favorite.
